En route to the Pirates of Lanier Charity Poker Run in Georgia, good friends and business associates Andy Imhof and Justin Wagner joined a conference call on Thursday to discuss the groundwork for a soon-to-be-released new model based on the Doug Wright Powerboats DWR 39 demo model owned by Wagner that Imhof and his righthand man Mitch Kramer drove to 147 mph during the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout at the end of August.
The longtime collaborators also talked about both the significance and the simplicity of the new edition 39-foot cat, which is powered by twin Mercury Racing 500R engines featuring a MoTeC engine management system developed in partnership with Kong Performance in Pennsylvania.

“I spent a lot of time setting up the boat with support from my amazing team as well as the teams at Kong and MoTeC, so when Andy and Mitch hit that big number at the Shootout it felt great,” said Wagner, who owns Waves and Wheels in Missouri and, as of June, is the proud owner of DWR/Doug Wright Powerboats, which are constructed in Melbourne, Fla., before heading to Missouri for interior, paint, rigging and more. “We had a feeling the boat would be pretty fast. We knew how hard it pulled with the MoTeC system because we’ve literally been experimenting with it in our demo model since the 2024 Shootout. We also knew how well the boat handled so after a year of testing and showcasing what the engine enhancement package can do with what, in my opinion, is the best hull design to come from Doug Wright, we’ve decided to offer an ultra-premium line for both our 39- and 42-foot catamarans that can be configured with either an open cockpit or an enclosed canopy.
“The new Extreme or ‘XTR’ models as we’re designating them are going to be loaded with the highest-end components, constructed with a proprietary layup, and set up and tuned with pre-programmed settings to get the most out of the boats,” he continued. “These boats won’t be for everyone; in fact, they are going to be limited-production models for qualified customers. We’ve even secured insurance options already for qualified buyers.”
Although Wagner said any XTR model purchased through DWR is going to come with a warranty on the boat just like a stock version will, he explained that the engine package itself will come with a DWR-backed 60-day warranty from the day the customer takes delivery as the Mercury manufacturer warranties on the new engines purchased by DWR will be voided once the modifications are made. And while he knows a majority of his clients will be overly satisfied with a DWR 39 or 42 with stock 500Rs that include an eight-year-warranty option for the engines, he understands there are buyers who want the quickest, most-powerful, most-luxurious boat on the water. One that can top a whopping 150 mph rather than an already-impressive 130 mph that a DWR 39 with stock 500R engines can reach.
